Lisa Schaefer

Lisa Schaefer is an Edutainer and knowledge broker.  For the past 25 years, she has been engaging audiences with leadership and laughter.  As a certified John Maxwell Speaker and Coach, Lisa teaches the importance of trust and influence in leadership.  She is passionate about creating cultures in organizations that help people SHINE.  Lisa helps individuals and companies create strategic action plans that focus on the following:   (S) strengths, (H) heart, (I) ideas, (N) networking, (E) empower.

Lisa is versed in many industries and has successfully facilitated mastermind sessions for variety of professions.  Because of her background in counseling, she is able to reduce conflict and defense mechanism and encourage trust and team building in the organizations she serves.  Lisa has been asked to present at conferences on the areas of mental wellness, stress reduction and importance of open communication.

Lisa thrives on knowing her audience and conducts needs assessments with the professionals she works with to tailor content to meet their goals.  Her passion lies in the ability to increase productivity and engagement in each individual by helping them move past irrational beliefs and realize their full potential as a leader and organization.

Lisa is a certified Mental Health First Aid Trainer, holds a School and Community Counseling license with WI-DPI, and has served as a professor of Human Services, Psychology and Director of Student Services.   She also has been a contractor for Wisconsin DPI and provide training as Safe and Healthy Schools Professional.  Most recently, she has served as a Staff Development Specialist in the financial industry and focused on developing staff in the areas of customer experience, sales/referrals, and product knowledge. 

Lisa’s holds a Masters Degree in Education, School and Community Counseling as well as a Bachelor’s in Psychology and Marketing from the University of Wisconsin.  Lisa also completed her internship at Walt Disney World, where she studied the Disney Culture and Guest Experiences.  She has served on various non profit boards including Women’ Leadership Network, HavLife, and because of her early experience as a Radio Announcer and Director of Sales, she is often asked to serve as MC for special events and fundraisers.

Lisa is in the business of helping people SHINE and living authentically in leadership and life.

Tom Westbrook, Ph.D.

Professor of Leadership Studies, Drake University (ret)

and CEO of Learn Associates LLC

Tom Westbrook is an active presenter at numerous corporations and organizations across the Midwest. His clients include The Principal, Oldcastle Materials Group, Jeld-Wen, McAninch Construction, Wells Fargo, Wellmark, Nationwide, numerous associations, medical centers, school districts and colleges. His success at blending the theoretical aspects of leadership with practical, performance-based applications has won him praise as a master facilitator.


Tom’s work at Nationwide included the design of a 21st century learning model applied to their new School of Commercial Underwriting. With Wellmark, Tom and his team designed the orientation for communities creating Blue Zones in Iowa. His work at The Principal included the development of instructor-led, highly interactive traditional and web-based leadership courses offered to over 5000 leaders across the United States.


 Tom’s company, Learn Associates LLC designs and offers leadership development, train the trainer, as well as organization development courses, institutes, and workshops. He is a featured speaker at numerous association meetings and annual conferences.


Tom served on the administration and faculty of Drake University. Tom started, directed and taught in the undergraduate minor in Leadership Education & Development and taught graduate leadership classes. While at Simpson College, Tom served as Dean of Continuing Education, a program he initiated.

Dr. Steve Schulz

PresidentNorth Iowa Area Community College


Dr. Steve Schulz has served as the President of North Iowa Area Community College since 2013.  Prior to coming to NIACC, Dr. Schulz served as the Provost at DMACC, Carroll campus.  Dr. Schulz has had a 30-year career in education serving as a 7-12 teacher and coach, a middle school and high school principal, and as superintendent of the Carroll Community School District.


Dr. Schulz received his bachelor’s degree in history from Wartburg College in Waverly, his master’s in educational administration from the University of Northern Iowa, his education specialist degree from Drake University in Des Moines, and his Ph.D. in educational leadership and policy studies from Iowa State University.


He and his wife, Cathie, have two daughters, Lindsey and Caitlyn.   

Dr. Liang Chee Wee

President, Northeast Iowa Community College


Wee arrived in the USA on July 4, 1983 after serving in the Singapore Armed Forces. He received his education at the University of Arizona, Tucson. He has been an educator for over 30 years, first serving the University of Arizona, then Luther College, and now as president of Northeast Iowa Community College.


Wee straddles two cultures, sometimes successfully and other times not. He grew up in a rural village in Singapore. The Wee family history started in China and spans over 1,000 years with 41 generations recorded. A lesson he learned very early in life from his elders, and continuously reinforced over the years, was the importance of the collective and common good.  As he progresses in life, Wee has a deeper understanding and greater appreciation of his elders’ teaching.  Their teaching has impacted his personal and professional journey.

Jim Brattvet

Director of Economic Development, Eastern Iowa Community Colleges


Jim Brattvet is the Director of Economic Development of Eastern Iowa Community Colleges.  In this role, Jim and his team help build the region’s workforce through training and community outreach initiatives. 


Prior to joining EICC, Jim was a Director of Enrollment for the University of Phoenix and lead business development efforts in the financial industry.  Jim earned his MBA from Kennesaw State University, Bachelor of Science in Management degree from Florida Atlantic University, and most recently his PMP from the Project Management Institute. 


Jim’s time outside of work includes going on adventures with his wife and three elementary-aged children.

Curt Buhr

Continuing Ed Coordinator, Des Moines Area Community College

Curt Buhr has served as a Continuing Education Coordinator at DMACC since 2013 and has been a part of Iowa’s Community College system for over 10 years. Prior to his time at DMACC, Curt was a part of Business & Community Education at Hawkeye Community College. Curt began his career in the late-90’s as a Kindergarten teacher and has since continued his involvement in education in various capacities. Since joining IALL in 2010, Curt has served various roles within the organization and is the current Board President.


Curt received his bachelor’s degree in education from the University of Northern Iowa and his master’s degree in Leadership Development from Drake University.


He and his wife, Stacy, have a son (Parker), a daughter (Avery), and a high-maintenance dog (Pax).   


Tammy Steinwandt LPN, BS, MHA

Healthcare Continuing Ed Coordinator, Des Moines Area Community College

Tammy is currently the Coordinator for Health Care at Des Moines Area Community College in Continuing Education. Tammy has a wonderful and blessed career. Tammy's career and experience has spanned the last 30-plus years ranging from direct care in Hospital, Clinic, and Hospice Care to several years in Public Health, Education, and Wellness Management.


Tammy is an active volunteer and advocate for many organizations, including JDRF, Immune Deficiency Foundation, the Cancer Action Network, American Lung Association, One Iowa, and the Scleroderma Foundation.


Tammy loves life and enjoys every minute with her wife, working outdoors on their acreage and loving all six of their grandchildren. In Tammy's words... "Life is good!"
